Kitty Clark
is a modern dancer, choreographer, educator, and producer
currently living in Shepherdstown, WV, in the state's
Eastern Panhandle. For ten years, she has been spearheading
performance projects that have aimed to make contemporary
dance and performance accessible to a broader audience.
She received a 2006 Governor's Arts Award as "Arts
Innovator" in recognition of her efforts in West
Virginia. She has choreographed and performed site-specific
dances in city parks and college gardens; collaborated
with dancers, musicians, and community participants
on outside improvisational performances along riverbanks;
and organized several presenting venues for herself
and other artists which forge ties between artists
of different areas while bringing a variety of performance
to a non-urban area. Through her interest in site-specific
performance, community-oriented projects, collaboration
with other artists, and improvisation, Clark has continually
sought new ways to create and present dance. She directs
Goose Route Arts Collaborative, Inc. (GRAC), an organization
whose mission is to collaborate with artists -- both
urban and non-urban -- to create and present new performance
pieces; to cultivate in audiences an appreciation
of dance, music, and other art forms; and to provide
communities with meaningful artistic experiences.
GRAC, Inc. produces Clark's choreography as well as
the annual Goose Route Dance Festival which brings
contemporary dance artists to perform and teach every
July in Shepherdstown.
Clark
and her projects have been supported by the WV Commission
on the Arts, the NJ Council for the Humanities, the
District of Columbia Arts & Humanities Council,
the Arts & Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County,
the Mardi Gras Fund, the Puffin Foundation, the Shepherdstown
Video Lottery Fund, the Shepherdstown Parks &
Recreation Fund, and the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation.
This funding has supported such projects as the creation
of Fields and Fences: The Farm Dance, a multi-disciplinary
piece that took place on a farm a piece and explored
our agricultural past and future; Down by the Riverside,
two site-specific performances with professional and
amateur dancers on the banks of the Potomac River;
a site-specific dance in a Hoboken, NJ, park; a series
of outdoor improvisations in Jefferson County, WV;
the Art Farm Performance Cafe; the Goose Route Dance
Festival; and has generally supported the creation
of new work. Her choreography has been seen at Dixon
Place/University Setttlement (NYC), Context Studios
(NYC), Marshall University (WV), West Virginia Wesleyan
College (WV), Shenandoah University (VA), Smith College
